This time last year the way the NHS went about improvement was overhauled, along with the rest of the healthcare system. Decisions needed to be made that would have repercussions for many years to come and for a huge number of people.
We were in a state with numerous national organisations responsible for improving the NHS. There was huge overlap and duplication. A hospital could quite easily find itself working with five or six different national improvement organisations. While there were successes, this approach wasn’t going to work long term given the looming backdrop of efficiency savings.
It was decided that the NHS needed just one improvement organisation – amalgamated, re-positioned and responsive to its key priorities and challenges. Radical and dramatic – yes, but necessary to bring all improvement expertise into one place. NHS Improving Quality emerged – struggling to rise like a phoenix from the ashes of its predecessors…
